CASE REPORT OF FEMALE PATIENT WITH SMOOTH MUSCLE TUMOR OF UNCERTAIN MALIGNANT POTENTIAL

Abstract

Smooth muscle tumors of uterus are usually categorized as benign leiomyomas or malignant leiomyosarcomas. Tumors not diagnosed unequivocally as benign or malignant should be defined as STUMP (smooth muscle tumor of uncertain malignant potential). In other words, it is a subgroup of uterine neoplasms that is rare and without standardized protocols yet, which makes it a true challenge for a physician. The reasons why patients seek medical help are heavy and irregular bleeding from the uterus with consequent anemia, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, pain in the pelvis or lower abdomen, abdominal distension, compressive symptoms such as urinary problems or constipation, and infertility. Fertility-sparing surgery is recommended for patients who have not given birth and wish to preserve fertility, while total hysterectomy with or without bilateral salpingo-oovariectomy is recommended for patients who do not plan further pregnancies.
