Abstract

In the pediatric population, the cough is  the most common symptom and sign of respiratory response to different agents. Cough is a protective, defensive reflex mechanism, which provides cleaning of the airways, helping evacuate accumulated secretions, foreign body or  irritants and pathogenic particles from the airways. The importance of cough has been seen in diseases in which the cough is ineffective, wherein the sensitivity of the reflex reduced , due to diseases such as generalized muscular dystrophy, tracheobronchomalacia, laryngeal dysfunction. It is very important to diagnose the disease, which causes coughing and cure  the underlying disease. Detailed medical history, clinical examination and appropriate tests are essential for the right diagnoses and therapies. At large number of patients, cough is the result of more associated diseases mostly represented post infectious bronchial hypersensitivity, asthma and postnasal drip /discharge, gastro-esophageal reflux. Cough is a useful reflex mechanism and in most cases it should not be suppressed. By itself, the cough is not a disease, but if it occurs often,  lasts for long time, interferes with activities, it should be assessed adequately. General measures of prevention, vaccination, chemoprophylaxis, immunotherapy, measures to control the environment and avoiding allergens and pollutants, the use of symptomatic measures and herbal preparations, present prevention of long lasting cough.
