MEAN PLATELET VOLUME AND PLATELET DISTRIBUTION WIDTH IN CHILDREN WITH DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract

Introduction. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by high blood glucose. Hyperglycemia can cause platelet indices alterations. Increased mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) have been described in patients with diabetes mellitus and have been considered as additional, low-cost markers of glucoregulation quality.
Objective. This study was aimed to investigate the association between platelet indices and glucoregulation quality in children with diabetes mellitus.
Methods. A retrospective study was carried out on 118 cases of diabetes mellitus from January 2020 to January 2021 at the Institute for Child and Youth Health Care of Vojvodina in Novi Sad, Serbia. MPV, PDW and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were measured. Children were divided into two groups according to glucoregulation quality. HbA1c level was used as a marker for quality of glucoregulation. Cut-off value was set at 6.5%. Platelet indices were compared between the groups performing Student’s t-test. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results. Average age in our study group was 13.17 ± 3.52 years. 65.1% of them were female with average age of 12.40 ± 3.79 years and 44.9% were males with average age of 14.11 ± 2.93 years. Children with poor glucoregulation (HbA1c>6.5%), compared to those with good glucoregulation (HbA1c<6.5%), had increased MPV (p=0.017) and PDW (p=0.042) values.
Conclusion. Platelet indices alterations in children with diabetes mellitus can be used as markers of glucoregulation quality. However, HbA1c still remains important laboratory parameter in clinical diabetology. Increased MPV and PDW should be used only as additional markers.
