Abstract

Puberty represents a transitory phase of children’s development associated with intensive growth and increase of reproductive capacity. Many factors can trigger the onset of puberty – genetic condition, neuropeptide and glycoprotein concentrations, gonadotropins and sex-hormone secretion as well as dietary changes.

Eating disorders caused by hypercaloric food intake may induce obesity in children, which is accompanied by premature puberty. On the other hand, reduced nutrition may lead to delayed puberty.

Premature puberty is defined as the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics in girls before the age of 8, and in boys before the age of 9 years.

Anthropometric characteristics at birth may be risk factors for premature puberty. Namely, children born with a birth weight of less than 2500 g, as well as SGA newborns ("small for gestational age"), but also a shorter birth length are anthropometric parameters that are directly related to earlier onset of puberty.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the published results on the importance and impact of food on the development of premature pubertal development.
