SEXUAL BEHAVIOR AND IMPACT ON THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH OF ADOLESCENTS IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF INDJIJA

Abstract

Introduction: Reproductive health of adoloscents is very susceptible on unfavorable environment impact, because it is especially conditioned by vulnerable and psychosocial development. The responsibility of youth towards their own health is often insufficient and their sexual behavior risky.

Aim: Examination of sexual behavior and habits of adolescents from municipality of Indjija and impact on reproductive health as well as analysis of appropriate measures for the improvement of health in this area.

Work methods: The study was conducted as cross sectional study during the school year 2014.-2015, among the adolescents in Indjija aged 15 to 19 years. Data on adolescent sexual behavior were collected by making anonymous survey.

Results: In this study, 490 adolescents have taken part, of whom 207 girls (42.24 %) and 283 boys (57.75 %). Sexual intercourse had 31.22% adolescents,39.57 % of the boys and 19.80 % of the girls. Examined adolescents have their first sexual intercourse with 16.33 years, boys with 16.25 years and girls with 16.53 years. Only 13.26% of adolescents who are sexually active had some form of education on reproductive health. Adolescents whose parents have lower eduaction tend to initiate their first sexual intercourse earlier. From contraceptives most adolescents use condoms (65.24%), the pace of fertile/infertile days used 18.64% of the girls and 7% of adolescent girls and the female partners of the examined adolescent boys are using birth control pills, and 14.84% of the boys and 8.47% of the girls have sexual intercourses without contraception. Pregnancy occured among 2.43% of the surveyed girls and no abortion. Sexual infection had 1.78% of the girls and 4.87% of the boys.

Conclusion: Considering the rise of sexually active adolescents and their earlier entry in sexual activity, in order to preserve their reproductive health, adolescents must be involved in education on sexuallity and family planning in early adolescence, initiated by parents, teachers, health workers as well as peer educators.
