Abstract

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is increasingly recognized in paediatric practice. Few clinical trials have been performed in this area in children and management is largely extrapolated from adult practice where there is a considerable evidence base. The lack of evidence results in infrequent and highly variable use of thromboprophylaxis in critically ill children. The incidence of VTE decreased after implementation of clinical guidelines for thromboprophylaxis in critically ill children.
